Have you ever wondered what else you can use your hot chocolate mugs for? I will tell you some great ways to put them into use.

Camping has always been a grand adventure, ever since I was a little girl. I didn’t always get along with my parents, but one thing we did which caused us to have splendid memories was spending time in the great outdoors. I remember my father, who used to tell us ghost stories and used to get my sister and me so scared we wouldn’t come out of our tents.

My mother would get so mad at my father, having to make a special cake in a mug. Her cake was different, as many do this in the microwave. Since we didn’t have it while camping, we would have to make use of what we had. With a little imagination, ingenuity, and heart, my mother would use an orange peel to make her Mug Cake. Here is the recipe.

  1. Chocolate Orange Campfire Cake in an Orange:
    • Ingredients:
      • Large orange
      • All-purpose flour
      • Cane sugar
      • Cocoa powder
      • Baking powder
      • Salt
      • Oil (olive or avocado oil works well)
      • Water or orange juice
      • Chocolate chips
      • Heavy-duty aluminum foil
      • Optional: Ice cream or whipped cream
    • Instructions:
      1. Cut the tops off the oranges and set them aside. Leave some orange in the skin to avoid any bitter pith.
      2. Scoop out the orange while leaving the skin intact and reserve the juice.
      3. Mix all the dry ingredients and chocolate chips together in a bowl.
      4. Add the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix well.
      5. Fill the oranges with the cake batter until they are about 3/4 full.
      6. Place the lids on top of each orange and wrap them with heavy-duty aluminum foil.
      7. Set the wrapped oranges, cut side up, in the campfire coals and cook until done (approximately 10 minutes). You can check doneness by inserting a knife; if it comes out clean, the cake is ready.
      8. Remove from the coals and allow to cool. Serve warm with ice cream or whipped cream if desired1.

This time was so fun, and one of the few memories I still have with my sister, who I lost when I was little. It brought us together in a way which food always does. I do hope you will enjoy this with your family as much as I did with mine.
